Mammoth Cave

I know I'm a glutton for punishment, I lined up for the third day in a row to go  into Mammoth Cave.  Not as many steps to this one, only 200 or so!

All three caves were different but all were stunning.

A jaw bone of some dead animal has become fossilised over time.

Here are some other things found in the cave during its exploration.

This sheet like rock was sheer and had red and yellow pigmentation it looked like a sheet of jasper.

Icecream fountain!

Helictites

This was a really weird stalagmite formation it looked like octopus coils.

I know....more steps. Just wanted to show how far up and down it was! This cave was originally named the “Dawn of Creation”. Mammoth is home to many remains including that of a Thylacine, or Tasmanian tiger and a Zygomaturus, a huge wombat-like creature.

Exiting the doline we thought that this was the last set of stairs...but oh now then we had to walk a kilometre down hill to get back to the beginning of the cave and where our car was parked!
